How to Create a QR Code for Your WiFi Network

"What's your WiFi password?" is one of the most repeated questions at every home gathering, café, and office. Reading out a 16-character mix of letters, numbers, and symbols is painful, and guests still mistype it. A WiFi QR code solves this permanently: guests point their phone camera at a printed card and they're online in two seconds.
Both iPhone and Android read WiFi QR codes natively, no app required.

How WiFi QR codes work

Design tips

- Use WPA2 or WPA3; avoid WEP and open networks
Troubleshooting
Phone won't connect? Check these in order:
- SSID is case-sensitive, confirm it matches the router exactly
- Password is exact, a single wrong character fails silently
- Security type matches, WPA2 vs WPA3 mismatch is a common cause
- 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz, some older devices can't see 5 GHz networks. If you have a dual-band router, generate a code for the 2.4 GHz SSID for maximum compatibility
- Very old phones may need a QR scanner app, anything from the last several years scans natively
Designing the physical card
A WiFi QR code lives in the physical world, so the card matters as much as the code. The version that works:
- Size: print at 3 cm minimum; 5–6 cm for wall-mounts where people scan from arm's length or further
- Contrast: near-black on near-white, nothing in between, reflective or patterned backgrounds defeat scanners
- Quiet zone: a clean margin around the code at least as wide as one module (a third of the code height is a safe rule)
- Label: put "Scan to join the WiFi" directly above the code so guests know what it is
- Test before you print: scan the digital version from your phone before laminating or ordering
Lamination is fine, just avoid curved or bumpy surfaces. A flat, high-contrast, correctly sized card scans the first time every time.
Three real deployments
- Home: print one card at 3–4 cm, keep it in the kitchen or on the fridge. Guests scan, you stop reciting passwords. Update the code whenever the password changes.
- Café or office: put the card at each table or at reception, 5 cm, on the same branded card stock as the rest of your signage. Guests scan without asking, which also cuts staff interruptions.
- Short-term rental: this is where a guest network pays for itself. Create a second SSID on your router dedicated to guests (no access to your main devices or file shares), put that network's details in the QR code, and you hand visitors a code instead of your home password. When a guest leaves, rotate the guest password and print a new code, your private network is untouched.
How QR codes survive damage
QR codes are more robust than they look. The format includes error correction, which lets a scanner reconstruct the code even if part of it is dirty, scratched, or covered by a corner of a label. Practical benefit: a coffee-ringed card on a café counter still scans. The trade-off is density, more error correction means a busier code and a slightly larger minimum print size.
